Fifth-grader Akane Sakurazaki was captivated by the magical world of rakugo (traditional Japanese storytelling), having watched her father, Shinta Aragawa, a rakugo performer, at work. To support his family who have helped him achieve his dream, Shinta takes the promotion exam to become a "shinuchi," the highest rank in the rakugo world. With Akane and others watching, Shinta demonstrates his abilities, but the promotion exam takes a shocking turn that no one could have predicted.

Guriko Aragawa, a rakugo performer in his second year, hears rumors that his master, Shiguma Aragawa, is having a secret rendezvous with a young woman and begins to investigate. There, he finds Akane, a high school student receiving rakugo lessons from Shiguma at a karaoke bar. At the same time, Shiguma receives a call that they urgently need one performer for a rakugo show at the "Rakugo Cafe," and instead of the more experienced Guriko, he nominates Akane.

After her first performance, Akane, inspired by Aragawa Kaisei, decides to become an apprentice to the Shiguma school. Shiguma introduces her to a group of unique senior apprentices, and the earnest Aragawa Kyoji is assigned to mentor Akane. Akane is excited, believing this will allow her to hone her skills, but Kyoji only assigns her menial tasks. Furthermore, she ends up training in an unexpected location…

Having learned the art of attentiveness during her apprenticeship at the izakaya "Umi," Akane accompanies Kyoji to their next job. The venue for the day is a nursing home, where they will perform rakugo as part of the facility's recreation. Akane puts all the results of her training to good use on stage to entertain the elderly audience. Following her, Kyoji takes to the stage, determined to show Akane the authority of a senior apprentice.

Akane, a third-year high school student, breathes a sigh of relief after finishing her midterm exams, but her relief is short-lived as she receives guidance from her homeroom teacher about her future. And her teacher is none other than Iwashimizu, known as the "Ice Lady." Akane, who aspires to become a rakugo (traditional Japanese storytelling) performer, finds Iwashimizu unwilling to budge, instead advising her to pursue a more realistic path like university. Desperate to convince Iwashimizu to accept her dream, Akane consults with her friends in an attempt to win her over…

The student rakugo championship, the "Karaku Cup." When Akane learns that Aragawa Issei will be the head judge this year, she asks Shiguma if she can participate in the Karaku Cup. The condition Shiguma gives her is to "win with 'Jugemu'." Faced with the difficulty of winning with a story everyone knows, Akane, along with Guriko, tries to seek guidance from Aragawa Koguma, the "terakoya" (private school) of Shiguma's rakugo school, who is very knowledgeable about rakugo...

The day of the Karaku Cup qualifiers has arrived. This year's focus is on Karashito Renmaya, a university student who has won the Karaku Cup two years in a row, and Hikaru Takaragi, a rising young voice actress. Meanwhile, Kaisei, who is hosting the event, tells reporters that an unknown high school girl named Akane is the favorite to win. Koguma, Guriko, and Iwashimizu are also in the audience, watching over Akane. With such formidable rivals, will Akane be able to win the qualifiers with her "Jugemu" performance?

The final round of the Karaku Cup has finally begun. The head judge, Issei Aragawa, is in attendance. After the performances by the other contestants, it is finally time for one of the favorites to win, Karashi Nerima. Karashi's specialty is "adapted rakugo," which is a modern adaptation of classic rakugo stories. Karashi's bold approach gets a laugh from the audience, but how will Issei evaluate him?

The Karaku Cup finals. Following Karashi, voice actress Takaragi Hikaru takes the stage. Determined to change the current situation where voice actors are often judged on their looks rather than their acting ability, Hikaru enters the Karaku Cup and presents a human interest story that will allow her to showcase her expressive abilities. Coincidentally, the story she performs is "Shibahama," the same story that Shinta performed in his promotion exam to master rakugo performer six years ago. Hikaru's passionate performance electrifies the audience. In that atmosphere, it is finally Akane's turn to take the stage.

Unlike the preliminary rounds where she showcased her sharp wit and skill, Akane's performance in the main competition was a relatively understated rendition of "Jugemu." Karashiya Hikaru wondered if she had given up, but in reality, it was a rakugo-style approach that was pleasing to the audience, who were caught up in the excitement of the competition. By empathizing with the character's emotions and using a non-pushy delivery, Akane naturally drew the audience into the story, gradually reaching a certain level of mastery.

At a roundtable discussion, Akane confronts Issei Aragawa and directly asks him about the reason for Shinta's expulsion. Issei dismisses the surrounding reporters and sees through Akane's deception, realizing that she is a disciple of Shiguma. As Akane falters, Issei finally begins to explain the true meaning behind the expulsion incident six years ago, a topic he had never addressed before. What thoughts will arise in Akane's mind as she learns the reason for her father's expulsion, a question she has long sought...?

After winning the Karaku Cup, Akane suddenlybecomes the center of attention at her high school. However, Akane's feelings are complicated, as she feels she hasn't quite reached the level of impressing everyone. As graduation day approaches, her friends are inspired by Akane's success and begin to pursue their own dreams. Meanwhile, Shiguma ponders what stage name to give Akane when she officially becomes an apprentice after graduation. Akane, too, reflects on the origin of her own name and her father, Shinta.
