Around the World in 80 Weighs - Season 1

Season 1
Episodes

Episode 1
Six people from across Britain, who are each living with obesity, travel the globe to learn the diverse reasons why people around the world are affected by obesity. Hosts in each country show them the traditional way of eating and forms of exercise in their culture and analyse their local obesity crises. The tourists learn the some alarming truths about the potential health effects of obesity and are weighed together at the end of each episode to find out if they've managed to achieve their individual weight-loss goals. They begin in Japan - one of the world's rare success stories, where obesity is almost non-existent. They discover that this has been achieved by extreme government intervention and a culture of shame, including peculiar fitness apps that scold people for their weight. Russell's thoughts turn to his father, who died from diabetes, and he decides to face his own fears and take on everything that is thrown at him, including stripping off for a Sento bath.

Episode 2
The tourists travel to Tonga where they meet Ofeina who is fighting to turn around the island's obesity crisis. The traditional Tongan diet of raw fish is not a hit with the group but will they manage to lose any weight by the end of the week?

Episode 3
The tourists are in the USA in the heart of Texas where the food feels more familiar, but they are shocked to discover that there is a whole industry to cater for the overweight residents. On the one hand, there's a fast food joint on every corner, on the other, there are expensive quick fixes everywhere you look. The group are surprised to discover how hard it is to find good, cheap, fresh food in the shops and tensions brewing in the group finally boil over leading to a big row and lots of tears over a Texan BBQ.

Episode 4
They're on their final leg before heading home, in Mumbai in India, staying at the world-renowned Yoga Institute. It's boiling hot, and the tourists are struggling with their surroundings, especially when they discover that the food is vegetarian all week. They're shocked to find out that obesity is growing exponentially in India, and there are now 14 million obese children - some of whom are undergoing bariatric surgery to try to tackle their problems. Despite the heat and the shock of what they learn, some of the group embrace the yoga and find a new way to look at themselves, just in time before returning home. But what will the vegetarian diet and sweating in the heat mean at the end-of-week weigh-in?

Episode 5
The tourists are back home in the UK and back to reality. They managed to lose weight in every country they visited, but now they face the challenge of continuing to lose weight at home. After a month apart, the group meet at a country estate for a final weekend together, and one last weigh-in, to discover how they've all been doing.
