The new series focuses on Bancroft's continuing success following her promotion to Detective Chief Superintendent. She's popular with her colleagues, and her crime figures are down. However, her success comes at a price, as she's lonely and estranged from her beloved son Joe and under pressure as a result of her dangerous pact with crime boss Daanish Kamara.When Joe is inadvertently dragged into the middle of a double murder case, Bancroft determines to do anything to protect her son and finds herself up against a chilling new antagonist.

When a chilling double murder brings an unexpected personal reunion, Elizabeth's true loyalties are questioned. Forced onto the side lines by the new Detective Superintendent, Jake Harper, Elizabeth must turn to her old skills in order to get her way.

With the evidence around the Connors' murders building, Harper and the team are met with conflicting accounts. Taunted by one of the suspects and the trouble around the Kamara deal heating up, Elizabeth is forced to choose between her professional and personal loyalties. Deserted by her allies, Elizabeth enters a dangerous game of cat and mouse.

Free from the restrictions of her position, Elizabeth is determined to bring the true murderer to some form of justice. Armed with information to solve the case, she heads straight into the heart of the viper's nest. In a disturbing confrontation, she is forced to face her own demons.
