In the second of the first round matches, graduates representing both Durham University and the University of Edinburgh fight it out for a place in the semi finals. Christmas University Challenge is a series of matches featuring teams of distinguished graduates from ten universities. It is the penultimate first round match of the series, with graduates from both the University of Warwick and the University of Sheffield fighting it out in a bid to get through to the semi-finals. On the Warwick team, writer and broadcaster Christian Wolmar and on the Sheffield team, head of Radio One George Ergatoudis. Jeremy Paxman asks the questions.

It is the last of the first-round matches, with Trinity College, Cambridge, battling it out with the University of St Andrews. Guests include comedy writer and television producer John Lloyd CBE and sports broadcaster Hazel Irvine.
