When an unknown man arrives in the village of Schouwendam, it causes a great deal of unrest among the residents. The man claims he is Olaf Witte, who disappeared without a trace from the village 25 years ago. If it is him, what does he know about Alice Drost, a teenage girl who disappeared at the same time as Olaf?

After her boat is found floating on the lake, an extensive search gets underway for Maud van Keulen. Is there a connection between her disappearance and the possible return of Olaf Witte? The Criminal Investigation Department is called in to help. Then something is found on the water.

Various residents of Schouwendam recall what they remember from the time when Olaf and Alice disappeared. But it soon turns out that some of these stories contradict each other considerably. Karlijn van Andel tries to distinguish the lies from the truth and to discover what really happened in 1995.

Now that the mystery man is starting to regain some of his memories, it seems that he is still Olaf Witte. But DNA research once again shows that he cannot be Olaf. The investigation focuses on an area where there used to be allotment gardens. Who visited the gardens around the time that Olaf and Alice disappeared, and did something happen to them there?

A local man refuses to give DNA for a paternity test, causing many people to think that he must be the father of Olaf Witte. During Maud's funeral, Stijn does something unexpected, with far-reaching consequences. Shocking information about the past is revealed.

Karlijn is confronted with her own past when she comes under increasing pressure to solve the mystery. There are new victims in Schouwendam, and the paranoia of the residents takes on dangerous forms. When something is found in the forest, it turns everything upside down.

The shock of what was found in the forest reverberates throughout the town, and the suspected perpetrator has now fled. Karlijn van Andel tries to get a grip on what is going on in her head and talks to her psychologist. The tensions between Rogier and Willemijn van Pallant are increasing, and their armor is slipping.

Karlijn and the man who still thinks he is Olaf Witte reconstruct everything that happened in Poland. This yields a number of bewildering insights and conclusions that make the case take an unexpected turn. Back in Schouwendam, a mysterious phone call from Poland is investigated.

Slowly but surely it becomes clear what happened in 1995, on the night when Olaf and Alice disappeared. Still, questions remain, and Karlijn tries to put the last puzzle pieces into place. Once again, two inhabitants of Schouwendam disappear without a trace.

The truth is revealed in its entirety. What happened to Olaf and Alice in 1995? Is the unknown man Olaf Witte? Who has committed the murders in the present? Karlijn finds answers to these questions but puts herself in danger to do it--and she's not the only one whose life is on the line.
