Kleine Schritte
Das kleine, öffentliche Tiergehege beherbergt gewöhnlich nichts Spektakuläres. Hier leben Tiere, wie sie die Kinder der Großstadt sonst kaum kennen lernen können. Der übliche Frieden wird jedoch gestört, als in einer schmalen Futterkrippe ein Säugling tot aufgefunden wird. Die Umstände seines Todes werfen bei Schumann und seinem Team große Fragen auf. Was ist vorgefallen? Ein erster Weg führt die Ermittler zu Jenny Bräuer, der Mutter des kleinen Hannes. Die fragil wirkende junge Frau berichtet, ihr Baby sei entführt worden. Geht es um Menschenhandel? Käme Mario Höpfner, ein Kleinkrimineller und Jennys derzeitiger Freund, in Frage? Warum aber hätte er die Leiche des Kindes dann an solch exponierter Stelle ablegen sollen? Schumann sieht sich bei seinen Ermittlungen mit einer Frau konfrontiert, der offenbar niemand zutraute, eine gute Mutter zu sein. Jenny selbst stammt aus zerrütteten Verhältnissen und wuchs bei Pflegemutter Martha auf. Drogenkonsum und Jennys Neigung, stets die falschen Männer anzulächeln, haben die Beziehung der beiden Frauen in den vergangenen Jahren stark belastet. Auch das Jugendamt hatte Jenny schon ins Visier genommen, nachdem der Vater des Kindes, Felix Reuss, und dessen Mutter Petra sie angezeigt und das Sorgerecht für den kleinen Hannes gefordert hatten. Schumann muss sich von allen vorgefertigten und vorbelasteten Sichtweisen auf Jenny befreien, um die wahren Umstände des Todes des kleinen Hannes ermitteln zu können.
