Design Hunting in Shimane

On Design Hunting episodes, our presenters venture out of the studio to discover designs that are deeply rooted in regional history and local customs. This time Andy and Shaula visit Shimane Prefecture, located on the west coast of Japan's main island of Honshu, along the Sea of Japan. As the setting for many Japanese myths, the region has long been considered sacred ground, and is home to the important Izumo Taisha and many other Shinto shrines. We explore Izumo Taisha from a design perspective, and discover even older local craft traditions in metalworking, ceramics and more. Join us on a journey to track down the regional designs of Shimane!
