Chief inspectors Frank Elling and Lona Mendt are critically injured during a witness protection mission. The witness, twelve-year-old Sarah, manages to escape the brutal attack but has disappeared. Special investigators Hagen Dudek and Maya Kaminski take over the investigation and are faced with a difficult case. All files and records relating to Lona's and Elling's previous mission have been inexplicably deleted. What happened?

Detectives Lona Mendt and Frank Elling are investigating a complicated murder case that leads them into a web of dark secrets. The focus of the investigation is twelve-year-old Sarah, a Bulgarian orphan girl. But two weeks after they began their investigation, Lona and Elling are shot. They are in a coma, while Sarah disappears without a trace. Special investigators Maja Kaminski and Hagen Dudek take over the mysterious case. Their search for the truth becomes a dangerous game.

Maya Kaminski meets Dudek's sister Laura and gains deeper insights into Dudek's motivations. Flashback: Lona and Elling find a connection between the missing children from the home and the four buried bodies from the forest near Marnow. Little Sarah, who escapes from the children's home at night, comes into focus. Sarah remains missing, but the search for her leads Lona and Elling to a shady organization that uses children like goods for its own purposes.

Flashback: Lona, Elling and their new colleague Sam take up the illegal apartment that Sarah has been taken to. Sarah's life is in danger. LKA man Dudek doubts his boss Martin Gruber and tries to break free from his firm grip. He and Maya develop a plan to get to the people behind the attack on Lona and Elling.

Flashback: Lona and Elling have found Sarah. Sarah and Lona grow closer, but fate tears them apart again. With the help of Elling and Sam, Lona mercilessly hunts down the people who are planning something bad for Sarah. Dudek and Maya come dangerously close to the center of the conspiracy. Too close, as it turns out. There is a showdown at Schwerin Central Station.

Dudek tries to get his head out of the noose and takes full risks. Maya is hot on his heels. The human traffickers have caught Sarah. She is trapped. As the cold winter night falls, Lona and Elling don't have much time to free Sarah from their clutches.
