Season 20
1991 was Emmerdale's 20th year. Production was largely overseen by Stuart Doughty until he was replaced by Morag Bain late in the year.
104 episodes were broadcast during the year. Storylines included the departure of Amos Brearly, Alan Turner taking over as the Woolpack landlord, the birth of Alice Bates, the death of Henry Wilks, the wedding of Chris Tate and Kathy Merrick and Jim Latimer's release from prison and subsequent kidnapping Sarah Connolly.

Frank follows tradition and issues a role reversal at the New Year shooting party, with Seth in charge and himself, Alan, and Eric following orders at a Home Farm hunt. Frank assumes Elizabeth has no idea what to do, but she soon reveals herself to be a terrific shot and bags the most game of the day, with Joe in second. Kim clears the air with Joe about the negative comments she made about Frank during their private talk, blaming drink and insisting her marriage is fine. Bill Middleton turns repo man while Nick and Michael briefly move away from the tractor, as the Feldmanns never responded to the notices of payment. They go to tell Elizabeth. Amos gets into a huff when Sarah reveals she hasn't had time to look at or edit his extensive diaries

Paolo has taken an overdose but the police believe there are suspicious circumstances surrounding his death. The next morning, Jack calls Henry for news. Frank receives notice that the council have turned down his plans for the golf course. He's furious at how much work and money has gone to waste. It's Elsa's last day at work before going on maternity leave. Elizabeth tells Nick she's decided to go and see Frank. Jack tries to hide his concern for Marian around Sarah. Sarah asks Annie what Marian was like and she fills her in on the history between her, Jack, Joe and Paulo.

Elizabeth arrives for her first day half an hour early and keen to start work. Frank mopes around the house feeling bored and past it. A throwaway comment from Kim prompts him into action. Henry arrives back from Italy and breaks the news to Amos that the police think Marian murdered Paolo. Sarah is plagued by silent calls at the Emmerdale cottage. Kim is surprised when Frank tells her he's going to work and returns to the haulage company while Chris is taking Kathy to Caroline's in Scarborough. Alan is impressed when Elizabeth offers her straw from Blackthorn Farm to the fish farm for cash with a discount.

Frank wakes Chris and offers him a lift to work but he is adamant he is not going. Elizabeth suggests Michael should start looking for new employment. Nick ponders getting a paper round for extra money. Rachel makes plans for her new image having got Chris to agree to give her an extended lunch. Sarah gets at Jack by making digs about Marian and noting that the phone calls have stopped. Chris confronts Kim over Frank's return to the haulage firm. She accuses him of being spoilt. Gary meets with Alan and offers him the details of his loan for The Woolpack - he will pay a low rate of interest on the condition that he agrees to stock a certain number of Skipdale Breweries beer barrels alongside the other stock for a period of fifteen years. He is told that the more barrelage of Skipdale beer he sells, the bigger discount he will receive. Alan isn't sure.

It's early morning and Nick starts his paper round. Frank tries to get Chris to come into work again. Sarah and Jack row over Marian. Alan approaches Henry needing to do a projective cash flow chart for the loan. He lets Henry believe the loan is from a bank. Amos asks Henry to run him over to Kelthwaite to view a cottage. Jack tells Sarah he doesn't want to go to Italy but thinks he should. He asks Sarah to trust him but she doesn't want him to go. Amos is impressed with the cottage in Kelthwaite.

Elizabeth and Elsa watch as everything at Blackthorn Farm is auctioned off. Elizabeth gets emotional. Frank tells her he wishes there was something he could have done. Amos is not enjoying his final week in the village and is keen to go. Sarah gets Dolly and Annie to help with his farewell party. She confides in Dolly that she thinks Archie will have to be let go from Emmerdale as he is still barely turning up for work. Michael joins up with Elizabeth and Elsa. Their possessions don't pull in much money. Henry tells Amos a farewell party is being planned for him but he is adamant he doesn't want one. Henry pays his comments no attention. Frank catches Rachel booking a holiday at work.

Amos has fallen asleep packing his things in the backroom. Henry wakes him and is keen to find out what time he will be leaving. Sarah, Annie and Dolly prepare for Amos' farewell party at a speedy pace. Sarah insists that when Jack returns he will be working on the farm rather than attending the party. Alan surprises Elizabeth and Seth by turning up at the fish farm on Chris' motorbike, complete with leathers. He informs them he won it from Chris playing poker. The removal men begin taking Amos' stuff. Rachel calls round to 3 Demdyke Row and invites Michael to the party later. She breaks the news of Alan's new motorbike and her sacking from the haulage company. Michael angrily rants about the Tates and escorts Rachel to sign on in Hotten.

Kathy pulls over as she notices Chris' motorbike coming past her as she returns from Scarborough. She's confused as Alan goes sailing past her on it. Jack surprises Sarah by turning up at the farm having returned from Italy. She's frosty with him and informs him that Joe has taken himself away to France now before shooting him down when Jack tries to tell her what happened out there. Michael takes Rachel into Hotten to do some shopping. Jack forces Sarah to listen to him, explaining that he realised when he went over to Italy that he was chasing Marian's memory but has realised he loves her more than what he ever did Marian. Elizabeth organises Seth's tools at the fish farm to prevent him dashing off for items he can't find and wasting Alan's time

Frank feels guilty over Kathy's confrontation with him and decides to go and see Alan. Jack plans a romantic supper for Sarah. Frank matter of factly tells Alan that he'll write him a cheque for £500 and recover the bike for Chris but Alan refuses to part with it. When Frank threatens to take it anyway, Alan calls his bluff saying if he did he would ruin Chris's reputation. He mentions that he's noticed the bike is worth £5000. Zoe is disappointed to learn that Rachel is going on a date with Michael tonight. Henry admits to Annie that he's considered retiring again since the going-ons with Marian. Annie makes him realise that he needs to stick around and keep Alan in check at The Woolpack.

Early the next morning, Zoe sneaks Michael out of Home Farm before anyone wakes. Michael is keen to see her again but she seems uninterested. Dolly catches them and Zoe asks her to keep the secret. Elsa feels horrible when Nick has to rush out without any breakfast as he is late for his paper round. Dolly has to rush off to be sick after breakfast. Archie is disgusted when Michael brags about spending the night with Zoe and reminds him Rachel won't be impressed with his lie. It's Alan's first day at The Woolpack and he informs Seth that he is appointing Elizabeth as manager for the fish farm. She is delighted. Chris is annoyed to walk into work and find Frank at his desk again

Chris dashes off to work in an attempt to beat Frank in. Dolly returns from the doctors troubled. She tells Kim she's just feeling run down. Sarah persuades Rachel to get away from Beckindale while she's feeling glum. Alan decides to try out putting olives and cheese snacks on the bar and begins ordering Henry around. Henry firmly tells him that he's not prepared to go along with his changes. Chris and Frank disagree on how to move the business forward. Rachel takes a call from Michael wanting to meet her tonight but she cheerfully informs him she's going on holiday. Annie overhears and spots her travel brochures before demanding an explanation.

Kim receives a letter from a horse breeder in France. Elsa asks Alan to give her away and he's honoured. Kim calls the horse breeder in France and receives a surprise when Joe answers the phone. She hangs up as Dolly interrupts her call to tell her she's pregnant. Kim congratulates her but Dolly tells her she's having an abortion. Archie's unhappy when his mother, April, arrives in the village. Kim tries to get Dolly to rethink the abortion but she is adamant. She explains to Kim about Graham. Zoe bumps into April and invites her for a drink later, despite Archie's insistence that she return to Hotten and leave him be. Kim asks Dolly what Charlie has said about the baby but Dolly reveals she hasn't told him and doesn't intend to.

Kim confides in Dolly that the letter from the horse breeder in France was actually from Joe and explains to her about his attempt to kiss her. She worries that he was wanting to have an affair with her. Dolly uneasily escapes the conversation without passing comment. Mark shows Jack a letter from the council from before Christmas which Joe forgot to mention to him. The letter states that Emmerdale are blocking a bridle path between Pencross Fell and Filleigh Wood and it needs to cleared before 14th February, otherwise they will be billed for the council to clear it themselves. Sarah is forced to cancel her plans and clear the path.

Frank takes Sam to school while Dolly is in hospital for the abortion. He's concerned over what is wrong with her but Kim stays quiet. Michael and Elsa tease Elizabeth when she receives a Valentine's card, believing it's from Alan. Jack is jealous when Sarah reveals she got three Valentine's cards - one from him, one from Robert and one anonymous. She realises it's Gary and Dan as they hang around sniggering while waiting for Mark. Kim is also puzzled when she receives an additional anonymous card. Elizabeth gets Elsa prepared for her wedding day. She asks if Elsa is certain she wants to get married and Elsa confirms she does. Nick is nervous that Elsa won't show up at the registry office

Henry and Dolly see April being dropped off by a man outside The Woolpack. She tells them she thumbed a lift from a stranger while waiting at the bus stop. Dan and Gary push Mark to ask Paula out as he gazes at her standing at the bus stop. He's curious to know who sent her the other Valentine's card but builds up the courage to go over to her. Before he gets chance, a boy pulls up in a car and she gets in with him. Henry is angered when Alan orders him around in the bar. He instructs Henry to change the barrel of bitter while he goes to pick Elsa, Nick and the baby up from the hospital.

Sarah is tired working at both the farm and the pub. Jack is appreciative of her effort. Mark and Paula confirm their date and decide to meet at the cinema. Alan and Henry continue to get under each other's feet at The Woolpack. Jack receives the bill for the bridleway clearing from the council - £1,000. The midwife assures Elsa and Nick that the amount of crying Alice is doing is completely normal. She encourages Elsa to get more rest. Jack blames Kim for informing the council about the blocked bridleway when he finds her riding along it. Sarah apologises and explains how Joe left them in the lurch by not mentioning the letter.

Nick feels terrible for shouting at Alice the previous night, telling Elsa he just wanted her to have a good night's sleep. Mark is cheery as he helps Jack out at Emmerdale. Nick is late starting his paper round and takes Alice along with him. He informs Alan that he thinks Alice's crying is beginning to take its toll on Elizabeth and Michael. It's completion day on The Woolpack and Henry hands the pub keys over to Alan. They settle their differences and Henry informs Alan that he has decided to move out immediately, staying at the Dale View Guest House until he finds somewhere permanent. Alan is shocked and insists Henry is welcome to stay put in The Woolpack until he finds somewhere permanent. Henry accepts. Dolly is short with Kim at work.

Elsa is continuing to get little sleep looking after Alice. Henry gets a shock to wake and find the men in The Woolpack aren't decorators but builders and finds the sink has been removed and the water turned off. Elizabeth and Michael move into Victoria Cottage. Henry confronts Alan over the builders. Kim and Kathy find Nick asleep in the stables. Kathy explains that the baby is keeping him awake. Kim lets him sleep. Henry discovers Alan has made a deal with Skipdale Breweries in order to secure the money on The Woolpack, not knowing that the pub was already owned by Ephraim Monk's who have now found out about his deal. Nick is pleased to think that no-one caught him sleeping on the job.

Chris has been up all night trying to find an alternative for the lost contract and asks Kathy not to mention it to Kim. Henry is feeling lonely on his own at The Woolpack and jumps at the chance to accompany Annie in Hotten to shop for dinner. Jack receives a letter complaining about the farm's 'Beware of the bull' sign stating they're misleading people who want to use the right of way by saying there's a bull in the field when there isn't. He decides to take it down. Gary reveals his plans for The Woolpack to Alan but he isn't happy. Rachel tells Michael she doesn't want to spoil anything now they're friends again.

Jack questions Mark on when he'll return the £30 he borrowed. Zoe tries to be friendly with Rachel but the exchange between the two soon turns frosty when Zoe implies she went away to escape. Rachel calls Zoe selfish. Sarah shows interest in keeping a lamb who's lost its mother at the farmhouse. Alan reminds Elizabeth that he confided in her regarding Caroline in confidence. They both get a surprise when Caroline arrives at Victoria Cottage having found no-one in at 3 Demdyke Row. Henry isn't impressed when Charlie shows off some of his agricultural antiques as possibilities for decorating at the pub.

Jack agrees to Mark paying his £30 back in installments. Frank tells Chris he needs to stop worrying about what's happened and start concentrating on what they're going to do. Caroline's nose is put out of joint when Elsa mentions that Elizabeth is the best helper Alan says he's ever had. Having already picked antique pieces from Eric, Alan avoids Charlie's phonecalls. Sarah continues to 'mother' her lamb. Rachel is annoyed by Jack and Michael's attitude to farming and animal experimentation. Alan explains his ideas for The Woolpack to Caroline. Kim confides in Dolly about the haulage business potentially going bust. Elizabeth gives Elsa a lecture when she finds out Caroline is looking after Alice at night. Mark pays a visit to a bank in Hotten.

Frank and Chris tell Kathy and Kim that they're reducing the business to the bare-bones and want Kim to take over reception duties for them while Kathy manages the stables. Henry and Alan find that Amos suspected Seth was the son of George Verney. Seth cons free beer out of Ernie at The Malt Shovel by hinting of new plans at The Woolpack. Henry plans to look at the church records to find out if Amos' suspicions of Seth's paternity are correct. Michael tries to talk Rachel out of protesting. Nick and Dolly worry about their future at Home Farm as Dolly overhears Frank and Kim talking about laying staff off. Alan finds out that the Tates might be going under and frets about the fish farm.

Elizabeth tries to push Nick and Elsa into marrying before Alice's christening and plans to speak to Tony. Michael insists on going to the protest with Rachel to look after her. Dolly and Nick become fed up of waiting to find out about their jobs and Dolly demands an answer from Kim. Frank informs them that their jobs are safe. Dolly cringes as Alan arrives to question the future of the Fish Farm. Frank is frustrated that news of the Tates going bankrupt seems to be all over the village. He gives him a £200 cheque for the regulars on the opening night at The Woolpack in attempt to stop the rumours. Kim takes over the role of secretary while Kathy is made to take charge of the stables.

Joe arrives home from France. Archie tells Zoe that he, Michael and Rachel were a part of the raid on the vets' when she wonders why they've been targeted. He tells her that her boss is experimenting on animals. Alan and Gary go over the plans for the grand re-opening at The Woolpack. Joe tells Jack he's feeling better than he has in a long time. Frank and Chris pack up the last of the items from their office. Zoe is shocked when Archie and Rachel present her with proof that her boss is involved in experimentation. Charlie calls at the market to find out how the audit is going. Eric gloats that everything is fine. Mark brings his girlfriend, Paula, back to the farm for dinner.

Joe isn't pleased when he discovers Mark has opened a bank account and spent £150 of his overdraft in three days. Alan tries to persuade Henry to help him out behind the bar until he can get a barmaid but he refuses. He asks Caroline for help in finding somebody. Kathy and Dolly grow tired of how they are being treated at Home Farm. Joe escorts Mark to the bank and closes his account. Zoe challenges Martin over his association with Skipdale Laboratories. When he confirms he's involved with them, she resigns.

Seth is taking liberties since being told that George may have been his father. Kathy is disappointed at how little time she's able to spend with Chris. Mark rings Paula but receives abuse from her father who thinks she was late home through being out on the town. Caroline arrives for her first shift at The Woolpack and is left to clear up dust and wash glasses from the night before. Joe rings Paula's dad in an attempt to explain her lateness the night before

It's Easter Sunday in the village and the day of Alice's christening. Mark is in a foul mood following Paula dumping him at her dad's wishes. Joe informs him that he's arranged to meet with her dad to sort the situation out. Alan tries to drum up trade in The Woolpack by offering a free pint to all men who bring their Easter "chicks" to the pub. Seth tries to persuade Alan to return to Monk's beer, noting that gimmicks won't work as his customers just simply don't like Skipdale beer. Kathy attempts to persuade a tired Chris to come to the christening with her. Zoe informs Frank about Martin Bennett being involved with Skipdale Laboratories and possible animal experimentation.

Kathy tries to get Chris to take the night off but he is adamant there is too much work. Sarah is looking up holidays but Jack isn't impressed with her choices, suggesting they should do something more adventurous. Caroline suggests a Happy Hour at The Woolpack - half-price on beers and lagers in an attempt to sell more of the Skipdale beer to meet Alan's quota. Henry is unimpressed but Alan thinks it's a great idea. Jack talks of a camping holiday with Sarah but she laughs at his plans when he injures his back fixing a wall. She tells him they're too old for that sort of thing. Kathy asks Sarah if she and Jack want to join her for a night out. Rachel informs Annie, Joe and Michael that she's considering going to Leeds University rather than Exeter as it's closer to home.

Henry is annoyed as Alan leaves him to take care of The Woolpack delivery. It's Robert's birthday. Kathy is tired of not seeing Chris and gets him to agree to a night out. Alan decides to arrange a radio commercial for The Woolpack. Caroline recommends that Alan should use a Yorkshire accent for the voiceover. Michael is annoyed to learn that Rachel plans to live in Leeds rather than commute from university every night.

Joe waits anxiously for an anniversary card from Kate. Sarah is annoyed with Jack's disappearance. An updated alarm system is fitted at The Woolpack on Alan's insistence. Henry fails to see the point as the old one was fine. Rachel tries to cheer Joe up by giving him an anniversary card from her and Mark. Seth agrees to do the radio commercial for Alan for a fee - eight free pints at The Woolpack. Rachel invites Michael along to go check out out the university with her next week. Elsa is crabby as Kathy fusses over Alice in the street telling Elsa she's envious of her.

When Kathy makes plans for that evening with Chris, and he fails to show, it appears she may have reached breaking point in regards to their relationship. Alan is put out when a TV executive rings The Woolpack, wanting to speak to Seth about the radio advert. Joe receives a letter from Kate and Annie advises caution, and Sarah's revenge attack on Jack backfires.

Kathy's annoyed when Chris wakes and puts his arm around her. Rachel worries as she waits for news on Michael's blood tests. Alan receives a letter saying that brewery sales aren't up to standards. Kathy lays down some ground rules for Chris while they're occupying the same space. Annie becomes annoyed by Henry's bad habits around the farmhouse. Chris expresses his disappointment to Frank that he and Kathy are over. Frank encourages him to fight for her. Rachel's overjoyed when Michael tells her his tests were negative. Joe decides to challenge Kim in the point-to-point members race. Frank tells Kim that his sperm count is low and it could take up to three years to change. He's relieved when Kim takes the news well. Alan tries to persuade Caroline to live in at The Woolpack again. Eric struggles to get around without a car. Annie loses her temper and confronts Henry over his bad habits.

Rachel invites Michael to join her in Leeds again. He expresses that her friends make her feel uncomfortable but agrees to join her. Alan begs Henry to get in touch with Monk's Brewery again. Sarah can't bear to see Annie and Henry at loggerheads and plans to have a word. Elizabeth is disappointed when the only person to remember her birthday is Seth. Michael worries that Rachel will change at university. Henry tiptoes around Annie at the farm. Kathy and Chris realise they're spending the night in together at Home Farm. Michael apologises to Elizabeth for forgetting her birthday. Elsa arrives with chocolates for her, having only just remembered.

Chris and Kathy have slept in separate rooms. She packs some of her things and goes to 3 Demdyke Row. Michael complains of feeling ill again and pulls out of the Leeds trip with Rachel. Kathy tells Caroline and Elsa what happened with Chris. Elsa wants to report him for attempted rape but Kathy tells her to leave it. Frank is concerned for the business when Kathy calls in sick and Chris arrives late and discovers they've had a row.

Alan makes Caroline breakfast following her first night at The Woolpack. Nick leaves to find out if he still has a job. Frank's amused when he discovers he punched Chris and tells him to get to work. Nick can't believe his luck. Annie continues to be annoyed by Henry's mess around the farmhouse. Mark asks to borrow a tent from Jack as he and some friends are arranging to go camping. Alan receives notice that Monk's Brewery are coming to inspect The Woolpack today. He makes out Caroline has been living in for some time. Rachel begins to wonder if Michael is putting on his illness to get out of going to Leeds. Dolly is amused when Eric wangles a free car from Maxwell's Garage in exchange for advertising their name all over it.

Kathy decides it's time to return to work. Henry gets under Annie's feet in the farmhouse kitchen. Mark has had a bad night sleeping outside in Jack's tent. Nick spots the girl Chris was with in The Woolpack leaving Home Farm and kissing him. Sarah feels for Henry when he goes birdwatching as a way of avoiding Annie. Annie feels guilty when she hears Henry's avoiding her. Frank walks in on an argument between Nick and Chris. Seth's horrified when he discovers The Woolpack is closed but is delighted to find out it's due to the pub switching to Ephraim Monk's ale. Chris pushes Frank to sack Nick but Frank refuses.

Alan prepares for the re-opening of The Woolpack and asks Seth to keep an eye on the spit roast. Kim frets to Frank over the possibility of losing the horse race to Joe. Alan becomes nostalgic over his relationship with Caroline after finding an entry about them in Amos' diary. He attempts to rekindle the flame but she snuffs it out. Eric sizes up the competition between Joe and Kim and starts encouraging people to place bets. Sarah tells Joe she's putting her money on Kim. Alan re-opens The Woolpack and the villagers celebrate the return of Monk's beer. Eric tells Frank that Joe is favourite to win the race. Tony and Kathy decide to be seen together in public, considering the fact that gossip has probably already flown around the village, Chris isn't too happy to see them and takes his retaliation out on the punters in The Woolpack. Alan becomes exceedingly overprotective and jealous when he discovers that Caroline is going out for the night with Eric. Rachel and Michael decide to leave the farm behind for a short while and go on holiday. Rachel arrives and Joe breaks the news that Kate is out of prison and returning. She is ecstatic. Frank receives a letter from Terry Prince informing him that one of the biggest engineering firms in Europe might be interested in using the haulage company. Rachel is puzzled as Joe explains about Kate staying with her father since leaving prison but is delighted that Kate is returning.

Seth is less than pleased to realise it was his wife! Bill's funeral has a sparse attendance, with even the vicar, Tony, having left town without telling anyone, necessitating a replacement. Alan is annoyed as he had a large spread at The Woolpack, but he soon has more serious problems when he collapses from pain. He takes some ribbing when his doctor tells him it's his allergies, and he can only eat mashed potatoes and pears, and can no longer drink alcohol.

Elsa greets them with two surprises - Alice in a new dress, ordered from the catalog, and a letter from London for Kathy. Rachel is in the kitchen with Annie and Michael, cleaning her new desk, when a photo falls out. Michael tries to keep it from her, but she soon sees that it's an old snap of Pete and Lynn Whiteley. Elsa gives Nick late birthday presents with a new shirt and pair of jeans, insisting it costs little as they pay in weekly installments.

Toril has barely slept due to a rowdy group listening to rock music and Eric's promises for a tour of the village are halted by car troubles. While fixing the car they see Seth laying a beer trail for Smokey. Kim invites Charlie to an intimate luncheon for two. Joe finds more dead sheep on the farm and goes to look for answers. Jack and Sarah are also busy, with Sarah unhappy because they won't have time to take Robert to a party. When Mark arrives, he has to take Robert. Joe goes to see Frank about the sheep, but Frank's more interested in Kim and Charlie. Chris stops by Demdyke to again ask Nick about Kathy's whereabouts, but Nick says he isn't his sister's keeper; he later relays the story to Elsa, who still insists Kathy is reunited with Tony Charlton.

Smokey nearly makes it to the pub until Alice drops her stuffed rabbit from her pram; Smokey takes it and runs off. Kathy starts to tell Chris about choosing between him and Tony Charlton, but Frank interrupts with Home Farm business; she promises they'll talk later. Frank gives Chris a pep talk before leaving for the meeting.

Charlie fails to appreciate Kim's sense of humour when he opens the blackmail letters to find three blank pieces of paper. Seth tells Archie his head injury has restricted him to light duty, and that an unsympathetic Alan wants him to lie about the number of stolen birds for insurance purposes.

After some prodding from Annie, Jack and Sarah attend the Harvest Festival with Joe, but Jack spends his time arguing with Frank about the holiday village and the future of farming. Celebration turns to tragedy when Mark brings bad news from Emmerdale Farm - Henry has been rushed to hospital with a heart attack. As the Sugdens wait by the phone, Joe gets the awful news that Henry has died.

Elsa asks Nick if he's ever thought of moving away from Beckindale and is disappointed when his answer is no. Frank is pleased to see Chris and Kathy happy again. Lynn tells Michael that she's not had a single offer on the house so will be staying put for a while longer. He tells her that Rachel has gone back to Leeds. Annie asks Joe to help her sort through Henry's things. Nick is disappointed to learn Kathy has spent the night with Chris. Elsa enviously talks of Rachel's life in Leeds to Elizabeth and Nick.

Kathy and Chris agree to get married as soon as possible, insisting on a small wedding. Elsa is touchy with Nick when he fusses her after she's been sick. Chris and Kathy break the news to Frank and Kim of their engagement. They're both pleased but Frank gets carried away with laying down plans. Elizabeth worries over Alan's health and encourages him to ask for help if he needs it. Michael prepares for his job interview tomorrow at Bartons Agricultural Suppliers, an agricultural suppliers. Frank excitedly forces Kathy to call Caroline and Chris to call Zoe to break their news. Chris asks Kim to have a word with Frank and back off from making plans for them. Elsa tells Nick she thinks she's pregnant and has picked up a pregnancy test to make sure.

Chris and Kathy are busy planning their wedding. Chris is looking forward to telling Frank that it is all organised. Kathy invites Lynn to go shopping for a wedding dress. Elsa waits anxiously for the results of her home pregnancy testing kit. Frank is getting carried away organising the wedding reception. Kathy tries to tell him not to bother, but he won't listen. Elsa is relieved to find out that she is not pregnant. Nick is not so happy about it and hopes that they can try again. Alan is struggling carrying feed around the fish farm. Elizabeth tells him that he should be taking things easy. She tells him to consider taking a holiday. Kathy and Nick sort out how the rumour started about her being pregnant.

She does not fall for his plan. Alan treats himself to a fried breakfast before his trip to the health farm. Nick seeks reassurance from Frank that he is a good worker and that he would not want to lose him from Home Farm.

She thinks that Joe needs his own space and that they would only argue if Joe stays. She seems to have an idea to sort Mark out. Caroline and Kathy try and talk to Nick, but he is keeping busy at work and resents their interference. Michael has been out all night. He lies to Elizabeth that he stayed over with Archie.

She is worried about how she will cope. Rachel arrives home with Ally. She promises to have a word with Mark, but cannot guarantee that he will listen. It is night and Sarah tries to escape as Jim Latimer sleeps. Unfortunately he wakes up and stops her. In the morning, Annie encourages Jack to go to the incident room and find out what is happening. She makes sure that Robert is distracted. Elizabeth has lent Eric a gun for the shoot. Seth says that he thinks the shoot should have been cancelled out of respect for Sarah. Elizabeth thinks that they should carry on as normal. Sarah has nothing but contempt for Jim Latimer. He remains eerily silent. Jack explains to the detective that he feels so useless. Jim unties Sarah so that she can go to the toilet, but insists that he go with her. She tries to appeal to him to let her go and he speaks for the first time.

Elsa drops Alice off early at the childminder; she has not given her any breakfast. Seth brings Annie a couple of pheasants so that they can celebrate Sarah's homecoming. Annie likes his positive attitude. Alan is not happy with the restaurant review in the Hotten Courier as the reviewer likes his gourmet menu, but still repeatedly praises Carol's more common dishes from her last visit.

He tells Carol that it is so that he can play soothing music for his customers, but she realises that he is going to claim his hi-fi as a business expense when the VAT inspector calls. She suggests that he puts his television in the bar as well and he takes her seriously. Caroline is worried when Nick tells her that he is going to babysit for Alice that evening. She doesn't want him to build up his hopes. Alan is alarmed when the VAT man turns up. He introduces himself as Mr McKay - the man Eric told him about. Jack tries to encourage Sarah to take a break, but she just wants to keep busy. Eric panics Alan by telling him not to offer 'Mac the knife' a drink or lunch as he could construe that as a bribe. Nick has bought Alice's Christmas present.

She is upset when Chris tells her that it is the transportation of horses and ponies to the abattoir. Jack still does not know how to handle Sarah. They are having a row when Joe arrives with a Christmas tree for the farm. Nick tells the childminder that he and Elsa live apart.

Archie meets Nick and Alice in the village. Archie asks him how he is managing. Nick hasn't thought what he will do with Alice when he goes back to work, he is just happy to have Alice back. Archie is genuinely pleased for him. Zoe has checked over the rescued ponies for Kim. She is upset that her father is avoiding her and explains to Kim that she thought he would understand. Amos is coming to the farm for New Year. Joe suggests to Annie that they go to The Woolpack, but she doesn't think that it is a very good idea as Amos has not been back there since Alan took over. Joe is annoyed at Rachel being lazy, but Rachel says this is supposed to be her holiday. Sarah has a go at Jack for following her round again. They just don't seem to be able to communicate anymore
