Clare Balding presents the Burghley Horse Trials from Stamford in Lincolnshire, featuring the world's toughest cross country examination. Designed by Captain Mark Phillips, it includes 31 Grand National size fences and 45 jumping efforts across Burghley's undulating 6.5 kilometre track.
Among the international field of 70 plus world-class horses and riders are Great Britain's William Fox-Pitt, seeking an unprecedented seventh Burghley title, and his arch rival, New Zealand's Andrew Nicholson. Presently ranked number one in the world, Nicholson is the defending Burghley champion and a three-time winner of this Autumn Class of Eventing.
The Kiwis are also represented by Badminton winner Jonathan 'Jock' Padget, five-time Burghley Champion Sir Mark Todd and Caroline Powell, victorious three years ago. The host nation challengers include London Olympic silver medalist Tina Cook, Oliver Townend, successful in 2009, and Pippa Funnell, still the one and only rider to achieve the grand slam of Kentucky, Badminton and Burghley in a single season.
