Part 1
When Esther Waters enters service as kitchen maid at the Woodview racing stable, she is befriended by two people: the owner's wife Mrs Barfield, who, like Esther, is a devout member of the Plymouth Brethren, and William Latch, whose regard for Esther is not quite so religious.

Part 2
Devout, religious Esther Waters is seduced by the charms of the foot-man William Latch. Tormented by guilt she rejects and avoids him; then all in a moment, she realises she loves him. But it is too late.

Part 3
Abandoned by William, spurned by society, Esther faces the daunting prospect of bringing up her child alone.

Part 4
When William re-enters her life the wheel has turned full circle for Esther, and she is happy at last. But happiness demands a price.
