While reigning champions Manchester City have built a seemingly impregnable lead at the top of the table, neighbours United have struggled for consistency despite a change of manager. Nonetheless, United remain in the hunt for Champions League qualification and might be encouraged by the fact only three of the past 17 Manchester derbies in all competitions have been won by the home team.
Earlier in the week, City were one of three top-flight heavyweights with an FA Cup last-16 tie away to Championship opposition, while non-league Boreham Wood faced Frank Lampard's Everton.
