L'enquête
In a time when Protestants are hunted, Jean de Siorac and Jean de Sauveterre have retreated behind the ramparts of Mespech Castle. Between religious tensions with Isabelle, Siorac's wife, and the threat of a hostile neighbor, their home is in peril. As the king's investigators approach, a family secret resurfaces, upsetting the newfound tranquility.

La guerre
While Siorac returns to battle without having reconciled with Isabelle, the castle of Mespech is threatened by Fontenac, allied with bandits from beyond the Pyrenees. Isabelle and Sauveterre join forces and organize the defense of the estate, while Pierre gets closer to his brother Samson, digging the gap with François.

La conversion
After a heroic resistance led by Isabelle, Mespech triumphs over the bandits, revealing Fontenac's betrayal. Returning from the war covered in glory, Siorac, now Baron of Mespech, takes the opportunity to announce the community's conversion to Protestantism, despite the intractable opposition of Isabelle, faithful to her Catholic faith.

La médaille
After their conversion, Siorac and Sauveterre yearn for peace, despite the resistance of Isabelle and the other women of the house. Outside the castle, the country is torn apart. Taken hostage by a fanatical Protestant leader, Isabelle is saved in extremis by Siorac. The couple reconcile, Isabelle is pregnant again.

La peste
Isabelle's death leaves Jean inconsolable and Pierre carrying a heavy secret. The plague ravages the region. Fontenac, the sworn enemy, begs Siorac to save his daughter Diane who is suffering from the disease. Jean agrees on the condition that she be quarantined, and succeeds in curing her. François falls madly in love with Diane, while Pierre discovers love with Hélix.

Père et fils
The courage of the Sioracs, father and son, saved Sarlat from starvation. During a ceremony in their honor in front of the entire town, a demonstration duel between Pierre and François turns into a merciless brawl. François reveals Pierre's Catholic medal, provoking Siorac's anger. Disobeying his father, François asks Fontenac for Diane's hand, who sets a trap for Siorac.
