Season 1

Two years out of liberal arts school, Hannah Horvath believes she has the talent to be a successful writer, and though she has yet to complete her memoir, her parents cut her off financially without warning. Further complicating things for Hannah is her unrequited passion for eccentric actor Adam. As the harsh reality of rent and bills looms, she leans on her very-put-together best friend and roommate Marnie. Meanwhile, their British friend Jessa moves in with Shoshanna, her naïve younger cousin.

Hannah forges ahead with her dream of being a bestselling author and begins seeing someone new, but her enthusiasm is tempered by the responsibility she feels for her Adam, convalescing after his accident. Let down by work and still lonely after calling things off with Charlie, Marnie needs her best friend and former roommate more than ever, but lingering awkwardness and surprising turns only drive a wedge further between them. Jessa returns from her honeymoon, while Shoshanna takes charge of her new identity as a sexually active woman and copes with the emotions that come along with it, as Ray has an out-of-sight, out-of-mind attitude toward their relationship.

Season 3

Hannah is now in a committed relationship with Adam, and the two are settling into a newfound domesticity while Hannah works on rehabilitating her writing career. Meanwhile, Marnie is adjusting to life after a sudden and traumatic breakup with Charlie and meticulously working to achieve the life she feels she deserves. Nearing graduation, newly single Shoshanna masterminds a plan to create a healthy (at least on paper) balance between partying and her studies. And, continuing her streak of disrupting the lives of those around her, Jessa resurfaces and strikes up an ambiguous friendship with a flamboyant father figure.

Shoshanna graduates and begins interviewing for jobs while sorting out her relationship with Ray, and Jessa tries out sobriety through AA, though her ability to stir up drama remains undiminished.
