Chanettelin (20) bor sammen med sin mor Beryld (54) på Gaupen utenfor Hamar. Chanettelin er bekymret for at det dårlige kostholdet hjemme går ut over morens allerede skrantende helse. Beryld har to dårlige knær, og i det ene kneet har hun fått operert inn en protese. Operasjonen var mislykket, hvilket gjør at hun er dårlig til bens og har mye smerter. Når Eyvind Hellstrøm prater med Berylds barn og kjæresten Morten, oppdager han at det er flere rundt Beryld som må endre seg for at hun skal få den hjelpen hun trenger. Eyvind blir sjokkert når han oppdager hva som finnes i kjelleren i huset, og Beryld blir konfrontert med sin største frykt. Sammen med barna skreddersyr Hellstrøm et opplegg som skal hjelpe Beryld til et sunnere og bedre liv.
