Each year, a multitude of manga magazines are published in Japan. In fact, there were 231 varieties as of the end of 2016. Newly published comic books alone reached 12,591 books per year in 2016. Japan is well and truly a manga powerhouse! In today's manga industry, "web manga" and "free manga apps" are spreading rapidly and taking hold as alternatives to printed media. This time, we explore the current status of Japanese manga magazines in this transformative period and their future, while also reviewing the history of Japanese manga magazines.
