In 1536, in one of the most infamous events in English history, Henry VIII's second wife Anne Boleyn was beheaded. Her small daughter Elizabeth, who was not yet three years old, was left motherless. And as if that wasn't bad enough, Henry declared his daughter illegitimate. So how is it that Elizabeth, despite these tragic beginnings, went on to become England's most successful monarch? And what impact did her disgraced mother's legacy continue to have over her very long life.
