Happy, a West Indian boy, living in London, and Tod, a Cockney have both given up All-In Wrestling for safer jobs. But now they need money badly. Happy wants to give his wife a proper home, and Tod is in love with a girl who has expensive tastes. In the end they are forced back into the ring and matched against each other. 

Brigid is a young, imaginative and simple-hearted Irish peasant girl. The two people she loves most are her employer, the Canon, and O'Flingsley, the village schoolmaster. But a bitter feud develops between the two men and when this reaches its climax the person who suffers most is Brigid.
