Episode 1
Yorkshire, 1874. Annie Quaintain (Jessica Raine) is turfed out of home when her schoolmaster husband's death leaves her widowed and penniless. Shunned by society, and with no family to turn to, Annie is desperate for a place for her and her children, Martha (Amy James-Kelly) and George (Sam Bottomley), to stay. When she hears of jobs going in Culverdale Valley, where an enormous viaduct is being built, Annie, Martha and George have no choice but to set off for the promise of a new life in the vast expanse of the Yorkshire dales. Their journey takes them to a remote shanty town in the middle of a valley, the home to a community of navvies. A town called Jericho.

Episode 2
Annie unwittingly opens the door to the railway detective, who returns to Jericho with a secret he could expose that could ruin everything. Ralph, is ready to go to extreme lengths to stop him. Charles holds a Whitsun fair. Isabella has a idea on how to save the viaduct.

Episode 3
The cloud of Bamford is no longer hanging over the town and Coates is now in charge of Jericho. In an effort to protect its inhabitants from rogue traders, Coates makes himself some enemies, which will have grave consequences for everybody.

Episode 4
The town soon find out who Johnny really is and this leaves him isolated. Coates and Annie even keep their distance. Charles faces up to the prospect of financial ruin and realises he has to approach Jonas as a way of staying alive. Annie gets embroiled with Jonas and soon realises what his true plan is, leaving her in a dangerous situation that only Johnny may be able to help her out of.

Episode 5
Annie persuades George to move back home, but when he returns he threatens to expose a dark secret from her family's past. Charles announces a delay to wages, as money for the viaduct is running out. The workforce go on strike, forcing Charles to find money fast before they take matters into their own hands. Isabella wants Johnny out of the picture.

Episode 6
Annie and Johnny discover the planned quarry site could soon unearth their secret. Annie is soon left to hold it together alone, as Coates and Johnny's rivalry reaches it's pitch. The town discovers that there may be a murderer in their midst. Charles uncovers a secret.

Episode 7
Johnny becomes the prime suspect in the murder of Red Killeeen. In spite of a desperate plea from Annie, Charles has completely washed his hands of Johnny. George begins to buckle under the pressure, making Annie worry that the truth may be exposed. The evidence against Johnny soon builds as the hearing begins and he soon realises the terrifying fate he is facing.

Episode 8
Annie and Johnny's relationship is now out in the open and they can finally enjoy the intimacy of their union. Coates is on his way out, but he's determined his time in Jericho isn't done. A new quarry opening is a huge success for the community.
