For centuries, the faithful have made their way to Chichibu, in Saitama Prefecture, to visit Buddhist temples devoted to the Bodhisattva Kannon. This pilgrimage route, comprising 34 temples in all, became popular during the Edo Period some 200 years ago, and still draws many people to this day. Just 90 minutes from Tokyo by train, the Chichibu area is surrounded by mountains and boasts beautiful natural scenery together with historic rural villages. On this edition of Journeys in Japan, Estella Mak is shown around some of the major temples on the pilgrimage route by a local guide.
