The chieftain decides to save his life and give him to the "upbringing" of the family of the Cossack Churil, who should teach him Cossack wisdom. While Nazar goes on an expedition to rescue the captive Govor, Stepka tries to earn money so that the bricklayer Lukyan can restore the destroyed well.
