Going Green Kitchen

Alison makes the environment her top priority in this 'going green' kitchen ? recycling materials, reusing cabinet hardware and reducing waste by donating cabinetry and appliances instead of throwing them away. Rather than the typical demo, Alison keeps the cabinets and appliances intact and donates them to a local company for re-sale while all other materials go into a recyclable dumpster. The space is opened up by removing soffits and five layers of ugly, old flooring are replaced with dark brown bamboo planks. Alison brings in ceiling height cabinetry and countertops made of recycled oven glass to give the kitchen a new shape and function. Energy efficient appliances ?including a wine refrigerator -- and a sustainable living wall are installed, giving Kevin and Meeghan the ability to grow their own herbs year-round right in their own kitchen. Alison designs a DIY art wall out of scrap pieces of cork and a stylish wine rack to finish off the look.
