Bjørn Rønningen er en dyktig etterforsker i Oslo-politiet. Han er gift med med Carina og om ikke lenge skal han bli far til sitt første barn. Både privat og profesjonelt er hans fremste støttespiller broren Vegard som jobber som fengselsbetjent. En tilsynelatende rutinepreget fangetransport fra Østfold fengsel skal vise seg å snu livet på hodet for Bjørn. Transporten blir brutalt kapret, og i det voldelige sammenstøtet mister Vegard livet. Bjørn havner i sitt livs verste klemme. Dan Wester, leder av politiets hemmelige etterforskningsgruppe "Hunter", som er spesielt nedsatt for å løse saken, vil gjerne ha ham med på laget. Men Bjørn må takke nei, selv om han ønsker å stoppe bakmennene. Han har mer enn nok med å holde familien sammen etter tragedien. Av sin svigerinne Vibeke, har han nemlig fått vite at Vegard hadde truffet en annen dame, og var på vei til å skilles. Bjørn nekter å tro dette om broren, men etterhvert oppdager han at Vegard hadde et nært forhold til en kvinnelig fengselsvisitor. I Göteborg jobber norsk-svenske Gisela i en bar der loven ikke er det viktigste. Da den småkriminelle nordmannen Frode dukker opp og trenger hjelp umiddelbart, kommer Giselas halvferdige sykepleierutdannelse til nytte. Frode eller "Jonna" som han kaller seg, tar henne med til en lagerbygning i havnen hvor hun må delta i en risikofylt operasjon. En person har blitt skutt i lysken, og en 38 kalibers revolverkule må fjernes. Operasjonen går bra og Frode vil ta med Gisela på en tur til Oslo, han har en Ducati-motorsykkel han vil ha kjørt over grensen. Det Frode imidlertid ikke vet, er at Gisela er ansatt i narkotikapolitiet og jobber undercover. Sammen drar de mot riksgrensen.
