Первоначально этот проект носил название "Звезда"... Но даже переименованная в "Волгу", машина не потеряла статуса звезды первой величины. В ней все было непривычно: внешний вид и внутреннее убранство, компоновка и конструкция агрегатов. "Волга" завоевала всенародную любовь на Родине и объективное уважение за рубежом. В этой машине все было прекрасно. Даже двухцветная окраска и хромированный олень на капоте вызывали прилив национальной гордости: можем ведь! "Волгу" нельзя было просто купить. Только "получить" или "достать". В первом случае - за заслуги перед Отечеством, во втором - путем незаконных махинаций. Как бы то ни было, владельцами "Волги" становились лишь избранные: прошедшие строгий кастовый фильтр или умело его обошедшие. Четыре десятилетия - сначала "двадцать первая", затем "двадцать четвертая" и "тридцать первая" - "Волги" оставались составной частью строгого государственно-партийного регламента. Эти машины не нуждались в модернизации... как и сама Советская власть. Так продолжалось с 50-х по 90-е годы... Затем наступили новые времена. Как-то сразу и вдруг "Волга" из индекса элитарности превратилась в синоним косности и неповоротливости отечественной индустрии. О блеске и нищете, о взлете и падении звезды по имени "Волга" расскажет наш фильм. В этом нам помогут съемки идеально отреставрированных автомобилей, кадры из старых киножурналов, полузабытая хроника кинолаборатории ГАЗа.
