Former Russian KGB agent Viktor Kärppä has settled in Finland, the country of his ancestors. Now working as a private investigator, he is trying to forge a life of tranquility and order with his new girlfriend Marja Takala, an independent-minded academic who likes to keep thing simple. But then a kindly antiques dealer hires him to find his missing Estonian wife, which leads Viktor to a high-stakes robbery that appears to be the work of a well-known Estonian criminal.

The "Russian Mafia" in Saint Petersburg suspects that Victor and his ne'er-do-well brother Aleksei are responsible for bringing in the fake heroin, and threaten both brothers, as well as Viktor's girlfriend Marja.
