The BBC will bring audiences a month-long festival of European football including every step of England, Wales and Northern Ireland's journeys at Euro 2016, alongside Europe's elite

Gary Lineker presents highlights from the opening game of Euro 2016, in which hosts France took on Romania at the Stade de France, Paris. The final will take place a month today in the same stadium, but before that, 50 matches will be fought out as teams strive to earn the right to be crowned European champions.

France won the tournament the last time they hosted it back in 1984, and would dearly love to repeat that feat. The man in charge of Les Bleus is Didier Deschamps, who knows what it is like to captain France to World Cup and Euros success – can he repeat that feat as a manager?

This is Albania's first-ever appearance at a major finals and expectations will be high back home that they can caused an upset against the Swiss, whose talisman is Stoke's Xherdan Shaqiri.

Wales are making their debut at the finals of a European Championship and it is the first time they have played in a major tournament since the 1958 World Cup. Led by talisman Gareth Bale, Chris Coleman's side take on a Slovakia team captained by Liverpool's Martin Skrtel.

The Republic of Ireland are taking part in their third European Championship campaign, and will be hopeful of winning only their second ever finals match – the last was a famous victory against England at Euro '88.

Like the Irish, Sweden had to come through the play-offs to qualify for this tournament, with the goals of brilliant striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic proving decisive. With tricky games against Belgium and Italy to come in the group stage, both sides will be desperate to get off to a winning start. As ever, Portuguese hopes rest largely on the brilliance of Cristiano Ronaldo. The Real Madrid superstar has won virtually every conceivable honour at club level, but chances are running out for him to lift silverware with his country.

Russia, the 2018 World Cup hosts, are looking to re-establish themselves on the international scene. They were inaugural European champions in 1960 as the Soviet Union and have finished as runners-up on three occasions.

Slovakia are appearing at their first European Championship. They impressed on their last showing at a major tournament, beating defending champions Italy at the 2010 World Cup en route to the last 16.

The BBC bring live coverage of the unmissable moment of the opening week as England face Wales in a blockbuster home nations clash.

The mouth-watering encounter is one of the most intriguing matches of the group stages, and has been eagerly awaited since the draw was made last December. Wayne Rooney and Harry Kane will be among those on display for England, while Real Madrid star Gareth Bale and Arsenal's Aaron Ramsey are set to feature for Wales.

England have won the last four encounters between the sides since Wales claimed a 1-0 victory in 1984.

Croatia have twice reached the quarter-finals, on debut in 1996 and again in 2008, and they boast one of the strongest midfields in world football, headlined by Real Madrid's Luka Modric and Ivan Rakitic of Barcelona. However, they struggled to qualify for Euro 2016 and new coach Ante Cacic remains an unpopular choice with the majority of fans, despite making the best start of any Croatia head coach.

The Czech Republic are ever-presents at the European Championship since independence and, in the absence of any true stars, coach Pavel Vrba has instilled a team ethic into his attack-minded, possession-based side.

Mark Chapman introduces live coverage of the Euro 2016 group game between Iceland and Hungary at the iconic Stade Velodrome in Marseille.

With a population of just 330,000, Iceland is the smallest country to have qualified for a European Championship or World Cup. But they were hugely impressive in qualifying, beating the Netherlands home and away and also defeating the Czech Republic and Turkey.

Hungary were once one of European football's heavyweights - the ‘Magical Magyars' that famously taught England a football lesson at Wembley in 1953, and they were World Cup finalists in 1938 and 1954. Though unfancied this summer, they will be hoping to recapture past glories.

While Cristiano Ronaldo remains Portugal's key attacking weapon, a new wave of young talent - including Renato Sanches and Joao Mario - will also be looking to make their mark on the international stage.

However, Austria will be tough opponents: they qualified unbeaten, winning nine of their 10 games, and boast midfield talents including Bayern Munich's David Alaba and Stoke's Marko Arnautovic.

France, meanwhile, will be eager to finish top of the group - if at all possible - as it could mean they avoid facing a fellow heavyweight in the last 16.

Hungary is competing in their first major tournament for 30 years, having come through a disjointed and chaotic qualifying campaign to progress via the play-offs under new coach Bernd Storck. The German has attempted to instil a more attacking approach from his side, with captain Balazs Dzsudzsak as instrumental for Hungary as Ronaldo is for his country.
