Matt Houston, a conglomerate head and part-time detective, is hired by a young woman to clear her of charges that she murdered her blackmailing billionaire father.

During a medical-research fund-raiser in Houston's office, a doctor is murdered by an orderly he fired—and who may have been hired as a hit man by a member of the doctor's research team.

A cat-food tycoon is killed by his own feline, and each of his ex-wives suspects that one of the others unleashed the big cat. 

From his padded cell, an institutionalized madman (Chuck Connors) sends thugs to attack Matt's friends and finally Houston himself. A maniac has kidnapped CJ, which is enough to make Matt's stetson curl. Then, at his birthday party, one of his presents explodes.

Matt Houston investigates the death of a scientist who was killed while awaiting a visit from extraterrestrials. 

Horror story author Emily Armor is killed at a party attended by writers and some witnesses claim that Slocum is the murderer. However, Matt thinks that he is innocent. Emily had been talking to Slocum when she was shot dead. Investigation lead Matt to suspect some novelists who are jealous of Emily's success.

When Matt's testimony puts Duval Sr's son in prison, the man kidnaps CJ in an effort to blackmail Matt in order to get his son's sentence's lifted.
