Máxima Zorreguieta finds herself in the spotlight when she appears at the Dutch crown prince's side, but by the moment Willem-Alexander asks her to marry him, the past catches up with her.

Máxima and Willem-Alexander meet at a party of mutual friends in Seville. Sparks fly and a romance blossoms between them. When Willem-Alexander takes her to The Hague to meet his parents, Máxima does her utmost to leave a good impression. But what she doesn't know is that Queen Beatrix has secretly started an investigation into her family.

When the press gets wind of the crown prince's new love, Máxima is constantly chased by paparazzi in New York. The situation escalates when the media links Máxima's father, Jorge Zorreguieta, to the murderous Videla regime that was in power in Argentina during Máxima's youth. Her father suddenly becomes the center of controversy.

Máxima moves to Brussels to start her integration under the guidance of Thomas Wagenaar. Due to Willem-Alexanders' busy schedule, he cannot visit her often. She feels lonely and misses her family and friends, while she struggles with her loyalty to her father and critical questions from the press. And then there is a painful revelation in a tabloid magazine.

After a disappointing experience in Brussels, Máxima returns to Argentina with a broken heart. During a personal conversation with her father, Máxima asks him if there is anything she should know about his past. Willem-Alexander does everything he can to win Máxima's heart back, but then a disturbing phone call puts their relationship to the test again.

Willem-Alexander tells Máxima that a formal investigation has shown that her father should not be present at their wedding. The news comes as a shock to her and she is furious. But doubts also arise for Máxima: what did her father really know about the horrific events that took place during her childhood?

Willem-Alexander asks Máxima to marry him during an ice skating trip and is even willing to give up the crown to share his life with her. That same day, the results of the investigation into Máxima's father are presented. After candid conversations with Queen Beatrix, among others, Máxima realizes that she must tell her father that he is not welcome at the wedding.
