On New Year's Day, Thomas Becker, son of the powerful building contractor Henry Becker, is shot in his car in a parking lot.
Commissioner Barbara Falck and her colleague Christian Krämer initially suspect a connection with the collapse of the "residential cube". This is an ambitious construction project by "Becker & Sohn" under the leadership of Thomas' half-brother Eric.
A young cleaner was killed in the collapse. The suspicion is reinforced by the fact that Henry Becker was hit by a car on New Year's Eve and has been seriously injured in the hospital ever since.

Before Thomas was murdered, the aloof Patriarch Henry Becker insisted that his son get his alcohol addiction under control.
Rumors circulated in public that Thomas was unable to bear responsibility for temporarily representing his father in the construction of the "residential cube".
Thomas bows to his father's wish and seeks help from Alcoholics Anonymous without his wife Marianne's knowledge. There he meets the mysterious Karoline and falls in love with her. A love story begins that not only further shakes the family balance, but also puts a lot of strain on Karoline's son Jimmy.

The murder of Thomas Becker continues to make waves. Did his father Henry take advantage of the ongoing rivalry between half-brothers Thomas and Eric?
Eric was always jealous of Thomas and would do almost anything to get the same love and recognition from his father, but also from Marianne.
Marianne, on the other hand, finds out that Thomas is cheating on her with Karoline and despairs of the idea of what she has given up for her relationship with Thomas. There are deep cracks in the seemingly perfect family facade that do not go unnoticed by the inspectors.

Before Thomas was murdered, he planned to start a new life with Karoline.
She lives with her son Jimmy, who has now gained trust in Thomas, on the constant run from her violent ex-husband Joachim, who actually has custody of the boy.
This planned new beginning completely shakes up the family structure of the Becker clan, and an increasingly complex picture emerges for the commissioners. Whether it was Eric's revenge, Marianne's jealousy, Henry's claim or Joachim's tyranny that cost Thomas his life will become clear step by step, because in the end each of them would have a motive.
