My America

My America (2013)

EndedDocumentary show

In the four-part documentary series My America, America correspondent Michiel Vos shows what it means to be an American. Like most of his interviewees, Vos is an immigrant. After a ceremony on Ellis Island in 2010 in which he pledged allegiance to the American flag, he was naturalized.

In addition to interviews with well-known immigrants (and their children) such as Barack Obama, Henry Kissinger, Arnold Schwarzenegger and fashion queen Diane von Furstenberg, the viewer is introduced to "his" America. Vos' emigrant life seems like a modern American fairytale. One of the reasons he can meet prominent guests is his mother-in-law, Nancy Pelosi, the first female Speaker of the United States House of Representatives and one of America's most influential women. Fox's wife, filmmaker Alexandra Pelosi, provides access to the world of cinema. For example, barbecues in the backyard of the White House and backstage meetings with famous media figures are part of his existence as an immigrant.

Yet "The American Dream" is not merely positive. For example, Vos takes a critical look at the American love for weapons and the Iraq war. America as an example, but also as a warning.
