National Velvet (1960-1962)
A series about a girl named Velvet who, after acquiring a horse, dedicates herself to training and dreaming of the day it wins a great race. Based on Enid Bagnold's best- selling novel and the MGM film, the TV version has been moved in locale from England to an American dairy farm region. It remains, however, the simple heart-warming story of a 12. year-old girl, her horse, and her great dream of winning a famous steeplechase. Most of all, "National Velvet" is the story of the Brown family — Herbert Brown, a modestly successful dairy farmer, played by Arthur Space; his wife, Martha Brown, portrayed by veteran actress Ann Doran; Edwina Brown, Velvel's boy-crazy older sister, played by Carole Wells, and small Donald Brown, a role filled by 7-year- old Joey Scott. Handyman Mi Taylor, who abets Velvel in many of her plans concerning the beautiful horse, is played by James McCallion.
