New Year's Day Concert - Season 17 / Year 2024

Season 17 / Year 2024

Vienna Philharmonic New Year's Concert 2024
The German conductor Christian Thielemann will conduct the Vienna Philharmonic's New Year's Concert in the Great Musikvereinssaal on January 1st, 2024, for the second time after 2019. He is one of the Philharmonic conductors who is particularly close to the orchestra. Ringing in the 'Bruckner Year' with Thielemann on the Upper Austrian composer's 200th birthday was particularly important to the Philharmonic Board. For the first time, a composition by Anton Bruckner will also be heard at the New Year's Concert - in addition to the usual Strauss waltz bliss. Bruckner also dominates the concert break organized by ORF with a film by Felix Breisach, which traces the composer's life between Ansfelden, Linz and Vienna with the participation of two clever choir boys from St. Florian. Locations were once again found for the ballet that had never been seen in the broadcast before - Bad Ischl and the Kaiservilla point to the soon-to-be European cultural capital in the region, the Rosenburg in the northern Waldviertel is the impressive setting for the second danced waltz. Davide Bombana created the two dance performances to the music of Johann Strauss Sohn and Carl M. Ziehrer with soloists from the Vienna State Ballet; the precious costumes were created for the first time by the Austrian fashion designer Susanne Bisovsky
