Генрих Бёлль — немецкий писатель, поэт, переводчик и сценарист. Во время Второй мировой войны в 1939—1945 годах пехотинцем воевал во Франции, участвовал в боях на Украине и в Крыму. Четыре раза был ранен, несколько раз симулировал болезни, пытаясь уклониться от военной службы. В 1970 Бёлль и Набоков публично сняли свои кандидатуры на Нобелевскую премию в пользу Александра Солженицына. Несмотря на это своего Нобеля Бёлль получил два года спустя «за творчество, в котором сочетается широкий охват действительности с высоким искусством создания характеров и которое стало весомым вкладом в возрождение немецкой литературы».
