It's the end of the 80s of the twentieth century. Life in the small town of Elista continues to flow in the usual way. However, the idyll that reigns here begins to crumble rapidly when, on one of the ordinary days, a young doctor Kirsan Ayushev begins to observe strange symptoms in some of his young patients. The latter soon lead him to believe that these children have HIV infection. However, when he tells his colleagues about this, the latter do not want to believe in his statement. In order to be able to confirm his words, Kirsan decides to send several tests to the metropolitan laboratory.

The young doctor Ayushev certainly informs his colleagues about his suspicions. However, the latter do not take the pediatrician's suspicions seriously. However, despite this situation, Kirsan is not going to just continue to sit idly by. After a bit of thought, he decides to send some test tests to one of the Moscow laboratories in order to finally find confirmation of his arguments. And after a while, he gets an answer, which turns out to be positive. This means that in Elista, as if from nowhere, there was an outbreak of the ill-fated HIV infection, which urgently needs to be stopped.…

Even in the recent past, life in the small town of Elista, located in the Kalmyk ASSR, proceeded in the usual measured spirit. However, the idyll reigning here began to crumble rapidly when, on an ordinary day, Kirsan Ayushev, who works as a pediatrician at a children's hospital, suddenly begins to observe a strange ailment in his many young patients. How great is his surprise when he realizes that this disease is an HIV infection. To verify his suspicions, he decides to secretly send test tests to one of the capital's laboratories.

On one of the usual days, a sudden outbreak of HIV infection occurs in Elista. All this is due to the negligent attitude of local specialists towards the sterilization of medical equipment. At that time, they had no idea about disposable syringes, which was one of the main reasons for the sudden outbreak of HIV infection. And the most terrible thing was the fact that over 70 infants fell ill with this disease, which, in general, turned out to be nothing to treat. After all, medicine has not yet been able to create such a medicine that would be able to overcome this ill-fated virus.

Who would have thought that one of the usual days, the capital's epidemiologist and an ordinary provincial pediatrician would have to join a single team and solve a more than serious problem. And now Dmitry Goncharov and Kirsan Ayushev have been painstakingly working for a long time, trying to find a way out of this unpleasant situation. The already uneasy atmosphere begins to strain even more when the two find themselves at some point in an impasse. Indeed, in general, HIV infection still belongs to a number of incurable infections that do not respond to any drug known to Soviet medicine.

HIV infection is truly a plague of the twentieth century. But it's not called that for nothing. After all, with negligence, it can take the lives of numerous people, as well as spread throughout the country at an incredibly high speed. In view of this, Goncharov and Ayushev now need to take a number of concrete steps promptly and, in general, determine the methods of combating this ill-fated infection. And all this must be done more than quickly in order to avoid terrible consequences. But it will not be so easy to achieve positive results. After all, there is absolutely nothing to treat such patients.…

By joining forces, Dmitry Goncharov, who is an experienced epidemiologist in the capital, and Kirsan Ayushev, who works as an ordinary pediatrician, begin to do everything possible and necessary to be able to overcome the "exotic" epidemic and in no case allow it to spread throughout the Soviet Union. However, this is not so easy to do. After all, it just so happened that Soviet doctors do not have the knowledge in this area to be able to quickly take effective steps in this aspect. But Goncharov is confident that by working together they will be able to achieve their goals.
