Julia and Maria are anxious to start production on their first deodorant commercial – however, their boss has requested they have the handsome young actors audition in their underwear.

A prospective client, Leyland Bartlett, a wood magnate, imbibes too heavily on a dinner date with Julia and passes out on her sofa-bed, leading to wild rumors that put Julia in an awkward position with her employer.

Maria falls for a tall, handsome man and interprets his distant attitude as a sign he really cares. Then suddenly, a surprise gift puts everything into a different light.

Maria is visited by her father who is fighting with her mother and it falls on Maria and Julia to show the two older people how to get along.

A blackout hits New York City leaving Julia stranded on the thirty-third floor with a resourceful insurance salesman who romances her by candlelight.

Julia's next door neighbor, a Shakespearian actor named Keith Keith, leaves his cat and his plants in Julia's care, leading to unexpected complications with the law.

Toni decides to bring in professional help from a psychologist when she notices the office tension has become unbearable. The staff undergoes group therapy, leading to total honesty and they air their grievances with one another which results in a new set of problems.

When the painters disrupt Maria's apartment, Julia insists she move in with her and it becomes a real test of their friendship.

Julia's landlady raises her rent and when Julia complains to Maria that her salary can't stand the increase, she discovers Maria's weekly income is great than hers.

Julia meets a blind radio announcer named "Jack the Bat" and falls for him, only to discover that his perception of things is clearer than she suspected.

A new client, of the Bedford Ad Agency, known as Mr. Sunshine, invites Maria, Julia and Eddie to his establishment in Palm Springs. They are delighted and plan to attend, then they find out it's a nudist camp.

Maria's Uncle Vito and his tart tongued assistant will never be the same after the girls moonlight for vacation money at his donut shop.

Julia takes her ketchup commercial to a famous writer, Alexander Butler, author of The Naked Summer, who is going to endorse the product and discovers his interests lie beyond a normal business relationship. 

Julia's fun loving, ex-sorority sister, Marilyn no longer having a husband, comes for a visit and pursues Julia's boyfriend.

When Toni joins a panel of business women on the David Susskind Show, she ends up being fired from the Bedford Ad Agency.

Eddie lies to two out-of-town friends that his girlfriend is April Baxter and that he is living with her. When they show up and want to meet her, he panics and pleads with April to help against her strong objections.

When Julia comes down with stomach pains following a night out with a young doctor, she ends up in a hospital emergency room as his patient.

Maria discovers an old high school flame still burns bright and before she knows it she's agreed to marry Skip Mazarelli from her neighborhood in Brooklyn. Then she discovers he has two children from a previous marriage. Part 1 of 2.
