Part 1
Commander Adam Dalgliesh arrives at Innocent House in Wapping, a mock-Venetian palazzo on the banks of the Thames, where he's been called to discuss a series of alarming hate mail with fellow poet and publisher Gabriel Dauntsey. While he is there, the body of one of the Peverell Press editors is found lying on a bed in the archive room.

Part 2
When the body of Peverell Press managing director Gerard Etienne is discovered at Innocent House, Commander Dalgliesh and his detectives try to find a link with the earlier death of the firm's editor. Their inquiries are interrupted by another grisly find.

Part 3
Aron makes a discovery in the archive rooms, the significance of which only comes to light when he attends his brother's wedding and seeks his father's advice. This information leads Dalgliesh and Miskin to finally bring the murderer to justice.
