Out of a misunderstanding, Xia Yan was contracted to Gu Huaizhi through a paper agreement. Over two years of companionship, reserved Xia Yan developed feelings for Gu Huaizhi. Xia Mingyue, Xia Yan's elder sister, was engaged to Gu Yuan, the nephew of Gu Huaizhi. Realizing Gu Yuan's reputation as a playboy, Xia Mingyue pushed Xia Yan to marry him instead of herself.
