Each of the passengers clung to lifejackets and they were stranded in the water for two days. When a small plane passed, Matthew was able to produce foam, by kicking the water, and successfully grabbed the passing plane's attention.

One night, a six-year-old girl slipped from her chair and was dangling by one arm from the grasp of her frightened mother. Shawn stopped the lift, and began climbing a pole, then hauling himself hand-over-hand along the cable until he reached the chair. He was then able to help the mother pull her daughter to safety.

Jason threw rocks at the bear until it eventually disappeared into the woods, and tended to his friends wounds. Jason was later awarded the Honour Medal for Bravery.
