Season 1
It's April of 1889. Haunted by the failure to catch London's most evil killer, Jack the Ripper, Inspector Edmund Reid now heads up the notorious H Division - the toughest police district in the East End. Charged with keeping order in the blood- stained streets of White chapel, Reid and his men find themselves fighting to uphold justice and the rule of law; but always in the background lurks the fear of the Ripper - is he back for another reign of terror? Rich episodic storylines meld with the intrigue of a criminal underworld festering on the hard streets of Victorian London, following the battle of the men whose job it is to bring the law to the lawless.


Season 2
Series 2 is set in 1890. It starts with Detective Maurice Linklater being involved in a horrible accident which sets about the investigation of a suspected opium den. Later, an Irish bomber escapes police custody and sets about an a demolition rampage and Homer's brother returns after eight years away and with a big surprise.


Season 3
Series 3 is set in 1894. The crime-fighting team of Reid, Drake and Jackson has fallen apart, and each man gone their separate way. Drake has moved to Manchester in search of a new life and a better existence as a man of the law; Jackson has reverted back to the man Reid found hopeless in a Tenter Street brothel; and Reid has retreated deep into his own mind, policing Whitechapel with a level of obsession that leads even his chief inspector to fear for him.


Season 4
Series 4 begins in the summer of 1897 with Queen Victoria celebrating her diamond jubilee. Edmund Reid (Matthew Macfadyen) has left the force which gave him his career and left the neighbourhood which shaped his life. He finds himself drawn back to Whitechapel when he discovers that his old friend is set to hang for a brutal murder.


Season 5
Returning to a dark secret they all share and to a Whitechapel terrorised by an all too familiar horror, Series Five sees the show's heroes take on a serial killer with subhuman desires, but a superhuman ability to avoid being apprehended.

She's a charismatic adventuress whom Book loves deeply but not physically, for they are in a 'lavender' marriage to help conceal Book's sexual orientation in a time when it was illegal to be gay.
Bookish marries post-war nostalgia with the reckless and life-affirming atmosphere of the times, creating a fast-paced and stylish detective drama.
