Shattered emotionally after his wife is killed by an assassin's bullet meant for him, a veteran police sergeant enters the priesthood. Three years later he is ordained Father Samuel Patrick Cavanaugh and assigned to the Saint Aloysius Parish in San Diego, California. Still referred to as Sarge and using unorthodox methods, he attempts to solve mysteries in his troubled parish.
