Als die Schmerzen schließlich zu groß werden, sucht er doch ein Krankenhaus auf. Dort treibt zur Zeit ein Kleptomane sein Unwesen. Unter dem Diebesgut findet Stockinger Assigals Fotoapparat mit einem Film. Die Entwicklung fördert Grausiges zutage: Stockinger erkennt Assigals bemalten Totenschädel im Gebeinhaus von Hallstatt. Dem Totenkopf zufolge ist der Mann bereits vor 12 Jahren beerdigt worden. Nachdem der Totengräber Stockinger von Assigals Schwester, die mit ihrem Mann Kienast in der Nähe ein Haus besitzt, erzählt hat, wird ein weiterer Mordanschlag auf Assigal verübt...
