Episode 1
In episode one, Jayne starts her morning shift as sister on the liver ward. Many of the patients suffer from problems caused by alcohol, making it a challenging ward to work on a some patients are suffering with the symptoms of withdrawal and can become aggressive.

Episode 2
Episode 2 features the hospital maintenance boys Martin and John, who also double up as the hospital fire and rescue team. Helicopters can't land until the boys are in their positions so when they get a call about an incoming emergency, they must drop everything and run. Susie is one of the most experienced A&E consultants working with both adults and children. One minute she is treating a man with a life threatening haemorrhage, the next she is trying to understand why 2-year-old Frank has been fitting. Susie reveals that even consultants can have self doubt, but that she'd rather ask for help from her colleagues than be an arrogant know it all! In the Macmillan unit, consultant Venkata is meeting one of the hospital's newest inpatients, Glynn, who has just been diagnosed with a tumour in his lung. Only time will tell if the treatment will be successful and Venkata knows that a difficult time lies ahead for Glynn and his family. Elsewhere in the hospital, consultant surgeon Arthur uses a Motown soundtrack to create a relaxed atmosphere in his theatre, housekeepers Collette and Sarah are keeping up spirits on the elderly ward, and the domestic team reveal an unusual cleaning method. We see how all of the staff in different departments care for patients who come to the Royal Derby in their own unique way.

Episode 3
Episode 3 features ex-bouncers Scott and Malcolm who swapped the pubs and clubs of Derby to become hospital security guards 10 years ago. From helping to restrain patients in A&E to looking for a missing suicidal patient, the security guard's never know what lies behind their next call. We also meet two nurses: Becki is a nurse on the neonatal ward, who forms a close bond with parents Keira and Dan who have been in hospital since their baby Jacob was born 14 weeks premature. Lee is a sister in A&E, who is about to clock off a tough shift on A&E when she has to deal with an unusual arrival in the ambulance bay – a woman giving birth in the back of a car.

Episode 4
Episode 4 shows the scale and variety of life changing moments that happen at the hospital all of the time. Surgeon Gill has to make the difficult decision of whether or not to operate on cancer patient Maldwyn. Meanwhile in maternity, trainee midwife Janine meets expectant parents Alison and Alan who have opted for a planned c-section after tragically losing their daughter the previous year. Derek is a patient in cardiology who has had to put holiday plans on hold as he awaits an operation to fit a stent in his heart. Roger is a volunteer at the hospital who is hoping he will graduate to the coveted role of buggy driver, and catering manager Paul demonstrates the military precision behind preparing and distributing thousands of meals across the hospital.
