A Fateful Arrival in Tokyo
Hiiragi Kyoichiro has left his home in Momoki Village to attend Imperial University in Tokyo. But as he excitedly makeshis way into the city, he suddenly realizes he's gotten a bit smaller...

Souls of the Imperial Capital
Kyoichiro is enjoying his first day in the capital with delicious senbei crackers when suddenly, he hears the cry of adead soul. The cry leads him to Shigure, leader of the Five Katana, crossing blades with the army's reserve corps.

The Army Reserve Corps
Ise Kaoru and Kahoru are twin brothers in the Japanese army's reserve corps. They awaken to discover that they've gottencuter, as has their captain, Tatebayashi Kai. Despite this, they have to see their mission through. They join up with Yuma and head out on patrol around the city, where they run into an old enemy, Shigure.

Noblesse Oblige
Shigure fights hard against Tatebayashi's squad, but he's pushed back by the Ise Brothers, who can manipulate the soulsof the dead. Kyoichiro is about to interfere, but he's interrupted by a man who questions his resolve...

Path of the Root
Kyoichiro walks the path of the root with Misaki and Shigure, where they run into Omi, a member of the Five Katana. Heexplains to Kyoichiro what the Five Katana are, and Misaki tells him not to get involved. Meanwhile, Senge Iori of the Japanese army receives a briefing on Kyoichiro.

What Are Souls of the Dead?
Tatebayashi and Senge (in cute form) square off in one of the Imperial Army's meeting rooms. Senge sees that Tatebayashiis struggling, and says he'll go after Kyoichiro himself. Ignorant of all this, Kyoichiro is returning home at evening, when he stumbles upon a few soldiers recovering a soul of the dead.

Chance Meeting
Kyoichiro receives a textbook purchasing guide from Imperial University. Kyoichiro is ready to start his schooling, buthe can't help but remember Misaki, Shigure, Tatebayashi, and the others he met the day before, as well as the dead soul he saw. Realizing there's not much he can do about it, he decides to go out shopping, only to run into Senge in the street.

In Order to Fight
Inside a barrier, Senge and Kyoichiro discuss the actions of the Japanese Empire. Senge shares his idea for how toresist the great powers of the world, and demands that Kyoichiro declare his loyalty to him.

Asking and Asked
Just as Kyoichiro refuses Senge's invitation, the barrier breaks, and Misaki and Shigure enter the scene. They saveKyoichiro, but when Shigure asks him what he wants to do, he can't answer. What could a mere student like him accomplish? Meanwhile, Senge and Tatebayashi share their own thoughts about the matter.

Right and Wrong
Kyoichiro is sitting alone when he's approached by Tatebayashi. Tatebayashi doesn't arrest him, but explains to himabout how the military is divided on the use of dead soul soldiers. He asks Kyoichiro what it is that he wants to do, and what actions he thinks will best serve their country, driving Kyoichiro deeper into thought.

The Light Ahead
A steam train runs through deep darkness. The burdens born by Shigure, Senge, and Tatebayashi are too heavy forKyoichiro not to sympathize with them, while Misaki wishes to watch over him. Kyoichiro makes his decision, and the light at the end of the tunnel appears...

Kyoichiro awakens from a long dream. His train will be reaching the capital soon, where his new life will begin. He is sure that there will be no souls of the dead in the capital. And so, determinedly, he takes his first step...
