Several millennia ago, Yao Ling'er, the Deity of Gourmandise, failed her tribulations in the Arctic Terra. As she was struck by lightning, she accidentally freed the Azure Fox Demon that was sealed away many years ago. The fox demon saved Yao Ling'er from her dangerous situation. To prevent the fox demon from being hunted by her immortal fellows, she brought him back to her abode and nursed it to health. As years gone by, they slowly developed feelings toward one another. One day, the martial senior of Yao Ling'er, Mo Nan, visited her and discovered the loving couple. He devised a plan to drive a wedge between the couple, causing the fox demon to die with resentment. To clear up the misunderstanding, Yao Ling'er turned into a human and descended to the Mortal Realm. There, the fox demon became Xia Xiaoyao, who had nothing but vengeance in his mind following his childhood tragedy that resulted in his broken family. Yao Ling'er helped him investigate the truth. As their journey unfolded, they solved one after another Foxfire incidents. Their misunderstanding cleared up and they once again embraced the feelings they had for each other.
