The abrupt and drunken arrival in London of Sophia's father, Squire Western, thwarts Lord Fellamar's plans. Sophia is locked away in her father's lodgings while Squire Western awaits the arrival of Allworthy and Master Blifil - still intent on marrying Sophia.
