In the old west of Texas, in the mid 1860s, a man wakes up in a shallow grave, half covered with dirt, wearing a Confederate uniform but with a U.S. army issued revolver. He has no memory of who he is, where he is, and why someone tried to bury him alive.

Found near death by a young man and his father, the stranger from the shallow grave is nursed back to health by the man's wife. Known only as Lazarus, after the close friend that Jesus Christ raised from the dead, he helps save the life of visiting President Ulysses S. Grant from an assassination attempt by a gang of rebels.

The Palace of Dreams
Needing a name, the man with no memory calls himself Lazarus, and in the search for his past, runs into a slick talking card shark who seems to be carrying an unknown grudge.

Purgatory
In his search for his past in the faces of people he meets, Lazarus comes across a man whom he thinks he knows from the murky shadows of a command he may have had in the Confederate army.
