Ikuko Nakamura, Home Care Dietitian

As in-home medical care becomes more common in Japan, it is not uncommon for patients with ailments such as diabetes and kidney disease to struggle with managing their dietary habits at home, compared to being in a hospital under constant supervision. Many end up being re-hospitalized as a result. One home care dietitian, however, has been able to achieve dramatic improvements in the eating habits of around 1,000 people - her name is Ikuko Nakamura. Her approach acknowledges that she is the "bearer of bad news", and that certain medical conditions demand highly restrictive diets as part of the treatment. Understanding that she is the one who must impose these unwelcome rules on patients, Nakamura strategizes carefully about how to win them over. Case by case, she has pioneered a dedicated, responsive approach to medical intervention through diet.
