Part Two
Howarth warns David that oneof the penalties of being a school-master is having to live a bachelor's life. David is determined to prove otherwise.

Part Three
A proposal to build a WarMemorial suddenly becomes a controversial issue at the school. David's decision to fight it causes some bitter hostility.

Part Four
David, deputising as House-master, finds that job more demanding than expected, and the arrival of Julia Darbyshire only adds to his problems.

Part Five
Content with his life at Bamfylde, with Beth and the twins, David is given his first promotion. Is he really ready to take on the extra responsibility?

Part Six
Young Winterbourne is still missing. The arrival of a policeman at the school comes as no surprise-until the reason for his visit is known.

Part Seven
Herries announces his retirement. David and Carter both put in their application for the job, but find the competition only just beginning.

Part Eight
Bamfylde's new headmaster takes up his position and he has his own very individual ideas on how the school should be run.

Part Nine
Carter, very unsettled at the school, makes an important decision. David, while attending a political meeting, is introduced to Christine Forster.

Part Ten
Completing the file he has compiled on David, Alcock presents it to the Board of Governors. They must make a difficult decision.

Part Eleven
The conflict between David and Alcock comes to an unexpected end. David now has to decide what to do, but it is Christine's sudden visit which makes up his mind.

Part Twelve
The arrival of Ulrich, a German boy, causes friction among some of the other boys. But David is far too preoccupied trying to sort out his personal life to take much notice.
