Tom Read Wilson's Magnificent Journey - Season 1

Season 1
Episodes

Episode 1
Tom Read Wilson begins his Grand Tour in Paris, where he's introduced to the refined world of aristocratic etiquette, under the guidance of a Parisian Contessa with ancestral ties to Marie Antoinette. Tom is joined by his modern-day bear leader, Sophie - a knowledgeable guide and tutor - who takes him to some of the city's most culturally significant sites including Notre-Dame and the Gardens of Versailles, famous for its extravagant parties.
Tom also witnesses a unique historical performance showcasing fencing, archery, and horse-riding - disciplines once seen as essential for any cultured aristocrat. Inspired to try his hand at fencing, he discovers a surprising aptitude for the sport.
Leaving Paris behind, Tom continues his journey south. Travelling by horse and carriage and later by train, he arrives at Lake Annecy, where he checks into a lakeside hotel frequented by the Grand Tourists. He then bravely embarks on a perilous crossing of the Alps and prepares himself for the next stage of his European adventure.

Episode 2
Having journeyed across the Alps, Tom finds solace in the serene beauty of Lake Como. Cruising in style aboard a vintage water taxi and capturing the moment on his Super 8 camera, he arrives at the breathtaking Villa Balbianello - a cinematic gem perched on the lake's edge, famously featured in Casino Royale and Star Wars, and once a summer haven for Grand Tourists. Tom learns of some scandalous escapades connected to the British Royal Family and is ushered down a secret passage to make his own escape from the villa.
Guided by his trusty Baedeker guidebook, Tom ventures to one of the region's many esteemed vineyards. On a sun-drenched terrace overlooking the Sorsasso winery, he savours a crisp glass of sparkling wine, soaking in the idyllic views.
Next, Tom floats above the lake in a hot-air balloon, heading towards Venice. There, he dons a glittering mask for the world-renowned Venice Carnival - a highlight of the Grand Tour and a chance for aristocrats to revel in unrestrained indulgence. With his learned tutor, or "bear leader," Tom is immersed in a world of art and elegance, from the masterpieces of Tintoretto to the city's magnificent architecture.
His journey culminates in timeless style: sipping coffee at Italy's oldest café and whirling through the night at the legendary Minetto Ball, swept back into the splendour of the 18th century.

Episode 3
Leaving behind the indulgent revelry of the Venice Carnival, Tom embarks on a scenic journey through Tuscany in a vintage Lancia, arriving in the cradle of the Renaissance - Florence. This city, long a magnet for Grand Tourists, enchants with its artistic splendour and architectural majesty. The sight of Filippo Brunelleschi's magnificent Dome leaves Tom awe-struck. Guided by his ever-knowledgeable tutor, or "bear leader," he stands before Michelangelo's iconic David and gains rare, private access to the Uffizi Gallery. There, he marvels at one of its crowning jewels - Botticelli's 'The Birth of Venus'.
Inspired by the greats, Tom visits master sculptor Raffaello Romanelli to try his hand at shaping a clay bust, following in the footsteps of countless Grand Tourists who once came to Florence to study art, architecture, and sculpture in this romantic, cultural haven.
Tom's journey then leads him to Rome, the pinnacle of the Grand Tour. With its layers of ancient history and vibrant artistic life, the Eternal City was a place where British travellers often lingered for months, even years. At the historic Caffè Greco - a gathering spot for thinkers and artists - Tom learns that just across the street lies the Keats-Shelley House, the final home of the romantic poet John Keats.
In true Grand Tourist fashion, Tom commissions a portrait - not the flattering ideal often painted by local artists, but a revealing portrayal of his true self, with striking results. As his time in Rome draws to a close, he embraces its timeless romance, joining street musicians to serenade passing lovers - and as his voice rises, hearts melt.
The Grand Tour was meant to transform its participants, to broaden horizons and deepen the soul. Reflecting on his own odyssey through Europe, Tom wonders: how has he changed, and what has he discovered on his very own journey?
