Hoe tem en berijd je een wild paard?
Tom heeft nog nooit op een paard gezeten, maar toch test hij in de allereerste aflevering het boekje The Modern Art of Taming Wild Horses van J.S. Rarey, een werkje uit 1865. Daarin legt Rarey, zowat de eerste echte Amerikaanse paardenfluisteraar, uit hoe je een wild paard moet vangen en temmen. Dat is een gevaarlijke en delicate bezigheid, maar Tom wil het toch proberen. In de VS lopen nog duizenden wilde mustangs rond en Tom trekt eerst naar de staat Nevada om er een te vangen. Hij krijgt daarbij de hulp van professionele paardenvangers die de mustangpopulatie in de VS beheren. Hij kan hun hulp goed gebruiken, want de dieren zijn in de vrije natuur geboren en zijn nog nooit in hun leven door een mens benaderd. Eens het paard gevangen is, wordt het naar Texas gebracht. Daar zal Tom proberen om het, onder begeleiding van ervaren paardenfluisteraar Clint, te temmen en uiteindelijk te berijden. Dat is op zich al geen eenvoudige opdracht, maar Tom wil de klus ook nog eens op zeven dagen klaren. Dat is waanzinnig snel en de meeste cowboys verklaren hem dan ook voor gek. Paarden temmen is een heel moeizaam proces waarbij je slechts heel voorzichtig, met kleine stapjes, vorderingen maakt. Als Tom het dier verkeerd inschat, kunnen de gevolgen rampzalig zijn. Een trap van een mustang kan dodelijk zijn. Vooral Toms plan om het dier na zeven dagen ook al te bestijgen is erg ambitieus. Als er dan iets misgaat, is hij de klos. Tom heeft geen enkele ervaring met het berijden van een tam paard, laat staan dat hij weet wat te doen wanneer zijn mustang zou beginnen steigeren en bokken. Via zijn eerste boekje kwam Tom terecht in een voor hem totaal vreemde wereld. Het werd een heel intense en emotionele ervaring in het hartje van de Amerikaanse Wild West.
